Sick of Viruses?

No kidding - so are we! Does it seem there are more of these mean little critters and they are getting more malevolent? Well, you’re not imagining things - after years of only occasional encounters with these software sickies, viruses are showing up all over these days.

Given the cumulative effect of years to spread for existing viruses, the constant introduction of new ones, and the rise of the internet for quick transmission, a “critical mass” of virus infection is upon up.

The hottest zone today is the Internet, and the bug in particular is the E-mail attachment. Happy 99, Melissa, Chernobyl, and all kinds of MS Word viruses are spreading, and some can even spread from viewing web sites. How to protect yourself?

  • anitivirus software with regular updates. (obviously, a new virus needs a new vaccine!)

  • Suspect E-mail attachments, even if they are from friends (some viruses send themselves to you from a friend without them even knowing it.)

  •  Try to resist (we know it’s hard) the temptation to forward along every goofy cartoon and game you find - these are usually long on download time, short on humor, and a great place for some dweeby hack to hide his latest virus.

  • Scan your floppies and then flip the little tab on the back to write protect them. Then use only on clean systems.

  • Make sure your Windows operating system and programs are up to date, thus closing any backdoor loopholes that can be exploited by clever internet hackers probing your vulnerabliities.

  • Spyware and other groups of infections may need additional tools.

We hope this helps. One bright spot - the powers that be are catching and prosecuting these guys much more often these days. The next question is - will they get a PC in prison?

If you are infected with a virus, and are not sure what to do, call us. We can advise you how to get your PC health back, and set you on a program to keep it that way.
