Flow
Wherein The Humble Master Imparts to Grasshopper the Secret Rhythm of Computing (with apologies to our favorite customer...you know
who you
are.)
Now, Grasshopper, join the Humble Master as we leave our bodies and travel
to a distant plane...We watch in stealth as our customer works with fevered brow
to make that omnipotent deadline...
"I got to finish this e-mail..." <click> "And this one..." <click> "And now...print this..." <click> "And this graphic" <click> "And send the e-mail..." <click> "Oh, man! what's the hang-up! C'mon! <click> <Click><
CLICK!!> "OK, FINE - I'll stop this download. <click> "Are you happy
now?" "No? then I'll save this, and this, and this while I'm waiting..."
<Click> <Click> <Click> Man, now it's the printer! what's the problem???? <CLICK!>
<CLICK!> <CLICK!!!> This computer is so *!%#?!#*" SLOW! <CLICK!!!> <CLICK!!!>
<CLICK!!!> Now what's happening??? <Click> <CLICK!!!!> "Hell-ooooo?!?!?!?!?!
<CLICK!!!><ClickClickClickClickClickClickClickClick!> <POUNDING FIST ON DESK> "THIS %!^@!?! SON-OF-A &^!!"@?"! GOODFORNOTHINGPIECEOF
$#!%!!?&#@!!!!!!!!!!!! "That's it! I'm calling Chris. This thing has screwed up for the LAST
TIME, and I want it repaired!!!!"
Now, Grasshopper, what has this taught you? "It's taught me not to answer the phone anytime soon!" You disappoint me, Grasshopper. The phone WILL ring. And we will answer. But
what to say? "Domino's Pizza, can I take your order?"
Hmmmm. Either computer broken or customer broken. We must divine which. We
calm customer and follow steps again. At each click, we watch, we wait. heard
hard drive spin, see light. Wait for heavy burden to pass. Let computer take
deep breath. Click again. Wait again. Watch for light again. Wait for hourglass
to pass. Feel at one with computer. Know it's burden. Follow it's flow. Wait for
download to finish with grace. then E-mail click. Wait for printer to print and
feel load subside. Then click. Not clickclickclick. NEVER clickclickclick.
"So, Humble Master, it's about feeling the flow of work through the
computer, making it smooth, and never rushing that keeps it from crashing?" Exactly, Grasshopper. (The phone rings...) "So now you will soothe the customer and make him one with his
computer, Humble Master?" We'll learn that in another lesson, Grasshopper. (picking up phone) "Domino's Pizza. Is this for pick up or delivery?"
Remember these tips and you’ll
find harmony with your PC.
-
Wait for the hourglass—it’s busy
working, continuing to click won’t hurry it up.
-
Watch the light on the hard drive for
activity—it’s also working. Wait or go slowly.
-
Save critical work at critical times.
-
Don’t leave applications you don’t need
open. They can slow things down.
-
Be careful about canceling processes—some
(like downloading or installing software) can lead to unpredictable results
or crashes.
