Backup Myths and Realities
“Oh boy, backup.” you say.
“Now that’s about as enjoyable as a triple root canal without anesthesia!”
Well, hang in
there...because unless you’ve already been bitten by the “I
don’t have a backup” monster when your system crashes you may not know pain
at all yet. Try to just get through it - you’ll feel better when it’s over.
Ok...Myth or Real?
-
When my hard disk crashes, I’ll
have plenty of warning - so I can get my data off first. Myth - Most modern hard disks
give little or now warning before corrupting data or losing all of it
altogether.
-
Ah, but we have a server
with 2 mirrored hard disks so I can’t go down. Myth - better than no
redundancy, but what if the computer itself (RAM, Motherboard goes bad? Or, more
commonly, the 2nd drive gets “lost” due to a bad configuration or a corrupt
operating system?
-
Our backup runs all the
time, all day, every day, so we’re never at risk. Myth - unless you have
specific software that is designed to backup the files you are working on (open
file management), the files you need the most are most likely being skipped over
- all day, every day.
-
We can always go back to
paper if we need to. Myth - most operations using
computers are virtually helpless these days without them. Do you know where your
invoice forms are? order sheets? and where’s that typewriter, anyway?
-
Our operation has everything
on the server and we back that up every night. You can’t do better than that Myth - the best strategy yet,
but still, chances are, unless you’ve had a professional set it up, very
critical data is stored on the local workstations. E-mail address books and
mail, word processing and spreadsheet files all tend to be setup to default to
local storage unless told otherwise.
-
I don’t have a backup. So,
worst case, I reload everything, re-enter the contents of our filing cabinets, and go from
there. True! And after that, you can
get that root canal you’ve been hoping for. ‘Nuff said!
Call us
for a backup audit - to be sure. We'll ascertain your backup needs, and propose a solution that fits your
budget. We can then install it at your site, and setup automatic backups that will guarantee
your data security and your peace of mind!
